I accidentally closed the Microsoft Toolbar. How do I get it back?
To restore the Microsoft Office Toolbar, first click on the Start
button. Choose Programs and then click on Windows Explorer. You
will now see the contents of your hard drive. Double click on the
Program Files folder. Now double click on the Microsoft Office folder.
In the right side window, you should see a list of files. Double
click on the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar icon. As the Office Toolbar
loads, you will see a dialog box that asks you if you want the Office
Toolbar to load automatically when Windows loads. Click Yes. You
now have your Microsoft Office Toolbar back on your desktop.
Does the University supply virus protection software to deal with
Word and Excel Macro Viruses and how do I get a copy?
Yes, the University does supply an anti-virus software package
called Sophos Anti-Virus. If you are a faculty or staff member and
would like the newest version installed on your office computer,
please e-mail Support@eller.Arizona.EDU and the Eller IT Support
staff will install it for you. If you would like to install it on
your home computer, you can download the newest version of Sophos
Anti-Virus from CCIT's Site License Page.
Sophos says I have a virus, but I can not get rid of it?
Run a scan under Sophos on the directory where the virus resides.
Relax. Most viruses cannot hurt your system unless they are run
by the user or a program. The most common viruses will come onto
your system through your email software. Sophos will detect these
viruses, but often will not delete it automatically. To manually
delete the virus, perform a virus scan through Sophos on the directory
where the virus was detected. For email viruses, this will often
be C:\ProgamFiles\Eudora\Attach.
How do I forward my Eller e-mail Account to another e-mail Account?
There are two ways to forward your Eller e-mail Account to another
e-mail Account. Method 1: Using WinQVT or another terminal program,
login to your Eller e-mail account. Once you get a system prompt,
type "menu" (without the quotes). This will bring up the
Eller Menu System. Arrow down to Misc. (Miscellaneous) and press
ENTER. On the next screen, select Forward and press ENTER. On the
next screen, select Set Forward and press ENTER. Now type the e-mail
address you would like to forward your mail to (i.e. jdoe@u.arizona.edu).
Make sure that there are no quotes around the e-mail address. Press
CTRL+X to exit and press Y to save the change. To exit the Menu
system press Q to quit and Y to verify that you wish to quit. Method
2: Once you get the system prompt, type "pico .forward"
(without the quotes). Now type the e-mail address you would like
to forward your mail to (i.e. jdoe@u.arizona.edu). Make sure that
there are no quotes around the e-mail address. Press CTRL+X to exit
and press Y to save the change. Using either method, your e-mail
Account has now been forwarded. NOTE: After you have set the forward,
test it by sending a message to your Eller Account. Once you have
sent the message, login to the account you had your e-mail forwarded
to and see if it has arrived at its new destination. If after a
few minutes you do not receive your test e-mail message, please
recheck the steps you followed above. If it appears like it should
work, but still does not, please send an e-mail to Support@eller.Arizona.EDU
explaining what you did and asking to have your forward fixed for
you (be certain to specify what the e-mail account you want the
forward set to.)
I can't access the internet/SIS/PSOS/Email. What is going on?
Reboot your machine. There are several causes for this. Sometimes
one of our servers, or even one of CCITs servers, crashes or goes
down for a short period of time. During this time, you may lose
access to various network resources. The server will usually be
back up within minutes; however you will still need to reboot your
machine in order to reconnect to those network resources.
I can't install any software on my machine. What is going on?
Contact Support. Machines are protected against the unauthorized
installation of software. This protects your machine from dangerous
or unstable programs that may be installed without your knowledge.
Therefore, you will need to contact support and we will be happy
to install the software for you.
How do I connect my laptop to the Eller network?
Eller IT created a web site for students who wish to "dock"
their laptops in the Graduate Computer Lab (McClelland Hall Room
335). For faculty and staff who wish to have their University-purchased
laptop connected to the Eller network, Eller IT can setup the laptop
and will provide support for any problems experienced. If the laptop
is your personal property, Eller IT cannot setup the laptop for
you nor provide support for any technical problems. We are working
on step-by-step instructions for faculty and staff to use to connect
their personal laptop to their departmental server in order to access
data and to print to the network printers. We hope to have these
instructions available soon.
An alternative way to connect to the Eller network is through the
wireless network. Instructions on how to connect can be found here.
What is DHCP?
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) allows someone's computer
to ask the network for an Internet Protocol (IP) Address. The computer
then makes use of the IP Address in order to browse the Internet
or check a person's e-mail. The purpose of using DHCP is to avoid
having to manually assign a specific IP address to every user's
computer. In this situation, for example, if one person uses a computer
with a specific IP address and another person tries to use another
computer that has the same IP address, the second person will be
unable to do anything until the first user has turned his computer
off. Using DHCP eliminates these problems.
How do I transfer a file from my computer to my e-mail Account?
Eller IT has a web page that contains instructions for how to transfer
files from your computer to your e-mail account using File Transfer
Protocol (FTP).
I was using my diskette yesterday, but it won't work now. Why?
Windows NT can be very sensitive to diskettes. If you originally
formatted the diskette on a Windows 95/98 or a DOS computer, we
recommend that you do the following: Format a new (second) diskette
on a Windows NT computer. Take both diskettes to a computer that
has Windows 95/98 or DOS on it and copy the data from the original
diskette to the new diskette. If you cannot read the original diskette
on the Windows 95/98 or DOS computer, please refer to Where can
I go to repair a damaged diskette?.
Where can I go to repair a damaged diskette?
Speak to the Lab Monitor in the Graduate Computer Lab (McClelland
Hall Room 335). They will contact a member of the Eller IT Support
staff, who will pickup the diskette, run some diagnostic scans on
it, and attempt to recover any files on the damaged diskette. But,
please be aware that Eller IT is not responsible for any loss of
data on a corrupted diskette, NOR do they guarantee that any data
will be recoverable.
