Graduate Lab - Windows 9x/ME Configuration

NOTE: This configuration has been successfully tested with standard installations of Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME.

Setting Up Network Connections

  • Click on the Start Button
  • Click on Settings -> Control Panel.

  • Double Click on Network.

  • After you have installed your network adapter, you will notice in this window that at least Client for Microsoft Networks and TCP/IP should already be installed. You will need to add two more components that will be necessary when it comes time to install the printers. Click on the Add button.

  • Select Protocol from the list and click on the OK button.

  • In the left hand window, select Microsoft and in the right hand window, select NetBEUI and OK. Now, if TCP/IP was not installed before, you can also install the TCP/IP protocol here. Once NetBEUI shows up in the list, click the OK button again.

  • Select Service and click the Add button.

  • Select the option for File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks and click OK.

  • Your Network properties window should now look like this. Click on the Identification tab at the top of the window.

  • You can name your laptop whatever you like (within reason), but you will need to change your workgroup (defaults normally to WORKGROUP) to ELLER. When you have done this, click back over to the Configuration tab.

  • Highlight Client for Microsoft Networks and click on the Properties button.

  • Check the box that says Log on to Windows NT domain, and in the Windows NT domain box, type ELLER. Select the option to Logon and restore network connections and click OK.

  • Highlight TCP/IP and click on the Properties button.

  • Check to see that the option for Obtain an IP address automatically is selected (it is selected by default when you first install networking, but it is always good just to double check). Click OK when you are finished.

  • When you get back to the main Network properties window, click OK. Windows will install the components you added and will ask you to reboot.

  • Click Yes to restart your computer.

Connecting to the Grad Lab Printers

  • Once you have rebooted your computer, you should be presented with a logon screen.

  • For your username, type in “docked” without the quotes. Your domain should already be filled in with ELLER. Click OK to logon.
  • Once logged on, click on the Start button.
  • Click on Settings -> Printers.
  • Double click on the Add Printer icon to begin the Add Printer Wizard.

  • Click on the Next button.

  • Select Network printer and click Next.

  • You will need to decide which printer you want to install. Either the Black and White printers or the Color printers. In the Network path or queue name box, for the black and white printers, type “\\128.196.40.171\gclab-bw” without the quotes. OR…

  • In the Network path or queue name box, for the color printer, type “\\128.196.40.171\gclab-color” without the quotes. (NOTE: This printer has been physically moved to the Sands Lab. You can still print to this printer, however, you will need to go to McClelland Hall Room #135 to retrieve your document(s).) Click Next to continue.

  • Name the printer whatever you like and click Next.

  • When you are asked if you want to print a test page, say no unless you want to pay to print a test page. Click Finish to continue.

You have now added the Grad Lab Printer queues to your printer list. Please note that the printer(s) you just created should say that it is PAUSED. Do not change this option or you will be unable to print. When you send a job to this you will not be asked to name your print job as you are able to do on the Grad Lab computers. When you go to the print station you will need to find your print job by username. You should see docked on the list of usernames. Make absolutely sure that the job you select is the one you want as there are NO REFUNDS.

Also note that the IP address of the server has changed from 128.196.40.15 to 128.196.40.171 since this was originally posted
